Of course, it’s true that dating, in general, can absolutely suck. Many singles are tired of disappointment and negative experiences when looking for love. When you’ve been dating for a while and nothing seems to pan out, hitting the “reset button” is easier said than done. In fact, bad dating experiences can push you to opt out of dating altogether because it’s too painful, or because you believe something is wrong with you.
If you have low self-esteem, maybe you’re preoccupied with wanting your date to like you more than you care if they are a good fit for you. When you feel as though you’re “not good enough,” you mistakenly believe that any attention is better than no attention, and may even find yourself settling for disrespectful or abusive treatment. If you’re looking for someone else to make you feel more confident, less lonely, and validate you, it may not be the best time to get into a new relationship. When the results of your dating efforts are discouraging, it’s hard to stay positive, but it’s important to keep going and not to let dating disappointments kill your self-confidence. It’s not worth it! “Don’t look for your dignity and self esteem outside of yourself,” says International Jewish educator Adrienne Gold Davis. For Jewish women, Gold says learning how to discover and uncover a sense of self that isn’t contingent upon the approval of others is one of our biggest challenges. “It’s difficult to maintain our self esteem when most of what we’re looking at (on social media) does not exist.”
If you’re struggling with dating because of poor self esteem, listen to the inspiring Adrienne Gold Davis tonight on Jewish Singles Radio.
