Dangerous Winds, Snow Squalls Heading to Pennsylvania
This winter has been mild for most of the United States, until now. The past few weeks have brought plenty of brutal weather across the US, including to the Northeast and East Coast. If you were wondering where winter went, it’s here. The National Weather Service says dangerous winds and snow squalls are heading to Pennsylvania. Here’s the scoop.
The good news is that after this weekend, we’re pretty much in the clear for a while. While it was looking like Tuesday (Jan. 16) was going to be a dicey day, the weather predictions have gotten a tad warmer, so instead of lots of snow, right now, the Tuesday forecast calls for a rain and snow mix. That should prevent too much accumulation. But, for the rest of this weekend and into Monday (Jan. 15), we’re not out of the woods.
The National Weather Service is warning of very strong winds in Pennsylvania, including Philadelphia, on Sunday (Jan. 14). In addition, dangerous snow squalls are expected across the state into the early afternoon. “Near whiteout conditions and a quick one half inch of snow in just 10 to 15 minutes will lead to dangerous travel conditions as a result of the very poor visibility and snow or ice covered roads,” they state in a special winter weather bulletin. “Winds will gust up to 50 mph in the squalls.”
As for wind, the National Weather Service also has a special weather statement out to watch for dangerous winds until Sunday evening (Jan. 14). They expect west winds at 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 40 to 50 mph. This impacts “portions of northern Delaware, central, northern and southern New Jersey and southeast Pennsylvania,” including Philadelphia. “An abrupt wind shift and wind speed will occur with a frontal passage this afternoon and may be accompanied by snow showers,” they state. They also add that, “Strong winds will persist into early this evening.” It’s also worth noting that if you’re on the west side of the state, near Pittsburgh, you don’t have this advisory. But, that area does have colder temperatures with dangerous wind chills. So, be careful all around.
