When you ask someone what being Jewish means to them – – a common answer is: being Jewish is mainly a matter of religion, ancestry, culture or some combination of those things. According to research only one-in-ten say being Jewish is only a matter of religion.
For many Jews who are not particularly religious, Jewish identity matters: Three-quarters of Jewish Americans say that “being Jewish” is either very important (42%) or somewhat important (34%) to them. Statistics show that Orthodox Jews are among the most highly religious groups in the U.S. Orthodox Judaism teaches that spiritual compatibility is the key to lasting love and that there’s something comforting about sharing a cultural and spiritual frame of reference.
The Talmud holds that a marriage between a Jew and a non-Jew is both prohibited and also does not constitute a marriage under Jewish law. Maybe your date comes from the same culture as you. Or, maybe they don’t come from that culture but respect and appreciate yours and your relationship with it.
For many Jewish singles dating after divorce, looking for your last first date, finding someone who shares your values, and supports what’s important to you is still a priority. Having a relationship that combines two different faiths can come with many blessings, but many challenges as well. Some see interfaith relationships as a sign of societal progress. Others just see problems.
Tonight at 6:30PM on Jewish singles Radio Laya Steinberg joins us LIVE in studio to share her personal story of forbidden love and her journey for freedom from a prominent Orthodox Jewish family to embrace the love of a non-Jewish man.
