The Big Bang Theory is one of my favorite TV shows that I sometimes (okay, always) rewatch, but it still makes me laugh no matter how many times I’ve watched it. It’s about the story of socially awkward scientists and roommates Leonard and Sheldon, and their colleagues. Raj is an astronomer, and Howard is an engineer. They both attempt to navigate relationships, their careers and daily life. Leonard and Sheldon’s quiet life became animated when they befriended their new neighbor, Penny. Amy and Bernadette, Sheldon and Howard’s love interests, respectively, complete the gang.

If you haven’t, let me convince you to add it to your “must-watch” list for the following reasons:

1. The Big Bang Theory is a Funny (and Smart) Show

The Big Bang Theory, or TBBT, is a nerdy show. Perhaps it’s one of the reasons why I love it, especially the references to other sci-fi and fantasy shows. It also makes learning science interesting and easy, and it almost made me want to be a physicist (but I hate math, so it’s a hard pass).

2. The Characters are Flawed and Relatable

The characters are relatable and often shown making mistakes and dealing with real-life issues such as relationship problems, career dilemmas, and other challenges that we normal people face daily. Seeing their characters grow over the season will not only inspire you but also make you feel like you’re a part of their gang.

3. Heartwarming Friendships

How often have I searched “Are the TBBT cast friends in real life?” that Google auto-fills the question for me? Their friendship on the show makes you wonder if they’re friends off-screen because of how well they depict adult friendships. From playing pranks with one another to saying their opinions with brutal honesty, you’d want a friendship like theirs that supports each other through thick and thin.

4. Nerd Culture Celebration

As I’ve already mentioned, I’m a bit of a nerd and thanks to TBBT, nerds are now welcomed in different social circles. The show has been a platform to celebrate and appreciate nerd culture. From comic books and video games to MCU and DC superheroes, the show has also piqued the interests of others about nerd culture.

5. Real-life Science

All the Science the cast talks about in every episode is accurate, thanks to the expertise of its consultant physicist, Dr. David Saltzberg (lucky him!). The Big Bang Theory doesn’t just entertain; it educates. You might not even notice it because you are entertained but come trivia night, you’ll be able to answer questions about string theory, black holes, quantum physics, microbiology and neurobiology.

6. A Glimpse into Academic Life

Most of the cast (except Penny and Bernadette) work at a university. It shows the lives of academics and scientists dealing with university politics and the pressures of catching up with colleagues publishing research, and winning academic awards. It depicts the highs and lows of an academic with a comedic twist.

7. Celebrity Guest Appearances

The show has featured famous guests who appeared in an episode or a recurring in several seasons. Notable guests include Stan Lee, Stephen Hawking, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Carrie Fisher, George Takei, Bill Nye, Will Wheaton, Buzz Aldrin, Steve Wozniak, Leonard Nimoy, Bill Gates and a lot more. These cameos add excitement to science and pop culture fans every season.

8. Binge-Worthy

With 12 seasons and 279 episodes, TBBT is perfect for a binge-watching marathon. Most episodes are less than 30 minutes each making it a perfect show to watch when you’re commuting, while waiting in a bank, or during your lunch break (is it obvious I’m trying too hard to convince you to watch it?). Whether you want to laugh, learn science in a fun way, or just unwind, this show offers hours of entertainment that will keep you hooked from Season 1 until Season 12.
