Mary McGerty Sieber, a Product Safety Investigator for the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, discussed recent important recalls and the agency’s work with the public. After going over the recall of Swing and Play bassinets and their campaign to anchor dressers, bookcases and other tall furniture, she spoke about the agency’s Neighborhood Safety Networks and Community Outreach Resource Center. These initiatives help prevent deaths and injuries through safety messages about Safe Sleep Environments for Baby, Drowning Prevention, TV and Furniture Tip Overs, Poison Prevention and Multi-generational Fire Safety. These campaigns also address the needs of ethnic communities or areas with limited English speakers, of low-income and of rural where injuries and accidents from consumer products occur more often. She also discussed the USCP’s Business Education offerings, including materials and handbooks on product testing, regulations and compliance for small businesses or start-ups.
Finally, a quick refresher on summer safety, adding barriers to pools, keeping kids away from fireworks and wearing appropriate gear for bike riding and other wheeled activities.
