Vanessa Lowery Brown is a dynamic community leader, cultural strategist, and advocate for equity and empowerment. As Vice President of Operations at Fortress Arts, she oversees strategic planning, program development, and organizational management to ensure the organization fulfills its mission of empowering communities through creative expression. Her work centers on implementing arts-based programming that uplifts historically marginalized voices and fosters cultural connection.

Vanessa’s professional journey began with a deep commitment to grassroots organizing and outreach through VLB Consulting Group, where she built trusted relationships and mobilized resources to support underserved neighborhoods. Over the years, she has led initiatives that champion youth empowerment, cultural celebration, and intergenerational dialogue—always guided by a belief in the power of community-led change. In her role as Vice President of Programming at Empowered CDC, she continues to design and lead programs that uplift voices, foster leadership, and create lasting impact across generations.

A proud alum of Howard University, Vanessa cultivated a foundation in leadership, service, and cultural awareness that continues to shape her work. While her path has not been defined by formal certifications, she brings decades of hands-on experience in grassroots organizing, youth development, and community programming. Her training is rooted in real-world impact—designing initiatives, building partnerships, and adapting resources to meet the evolving needs of historically marginalized communities.

In 2019, Vanessa was honored by the Philadelphia Tribune as one of the “Most Influential African Americans,” a recognition that reflects her lifelong commitment to community empowerment and leadership. She has launched impactful youth programs, organized culturally resonant events, and built bridges across generations. While proud of these milestones, she finds the greatest fulfillment in the everyday moments of transformation she witnesses in the communities she serves.

Her areas of expertise include youth leadership development, community engagement, and intergenerational programming. She is highly skilled in event planning, professional communication, and resource creation—ensuring every initiative is accessible, culturally relevant, and impactful. Vanessa’s work is guided by a deep understanding of community needs and a commitment to building meaningful, lasting relationships.

Among her notable projects, Vanessaserved as Executive Producer of Free; No Longer Bound, a transformative initiative that explores liberation, healing, and identity within historically marginalized communities. Through storytelling, performance, and cultural expression, the project created space for reflection, dialogue, and empowerment. She also fosters mental health awareness by curating film-based discussions that highlight human struggles and triumphs—using movies as a tool to spark conversations around emotional resilience, generational trauma, and healing.

Vanessa’s personal mission is to uplift historically marginalized communities by creating access to arts and culture—fostering expression, connection, and empowerment through creative experiences that honor heritage and inspire future generations. Her life’s work is rooted in service, and she remains deeply committed to supporting her community in any way she can—whether through leadership, advocacy, mentorship, or simply showing up where she’s needed most.

Outside of her professional work, Vanessa hosts a podcast on WWDB AM called “Protecting What Matters,” where she explores will and estate planning to help families safeguard their legacies. She also finds joy in crafting and sewing—creative outlets that allow her to express herself through color, texture, and design. These passions often find their way into her cultural programming and intergenerational initiatives, using art as a bridge to connect stories, traditions, and generations.
