The 19th Amendment: How Women Won the Vote at the National Constitution Center

Elena Popchock of  the National Constitution Center discussed the new exhibit, The 19th Amendment: How Women Won the Vote commemorating the centennial anniversary of voting rights for women.  She described how the exhibit traces the struggles that led to the ratification of the 19th Amendment, beginning with the few rights allowed women and the many they were denied at marriage, including property and child custody.  She talked about the founders Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Alice Paul, and Ida B. Wells at Seneca Falls, the path through ratification; including the foundation of the movement with abolitionists, and how their success lost lead to a pervasive racism within the movement.  Finally, the ongoing struggle after ratification, for equal rights, and for women of color, the rights guaranteed by the 19th Ammendment.  She described the collection of empemera and how to attend the workshops, town hals and access the teaching guides that follow the exhibit.
