\nChef Zavala hit the culinary scene running at full speed as a food truck vendor. Lucky for her, the food truck craze was on-trend, and her ever-popular tamales became a sensation, earning her a huge fan-base who sought her out on a daily basis. From there she continued her career as the grill-top chef under one of the biggest names globally–Iron Chef Jose Garces at his restaurant, Amada. From her roots as a self-taught chef to appearing as a contestant on Top Chef and working inside some of the most prestigious latin-based restaurants in the city–Chef Zavala is now being highlighted inside Garces Group’s restaurant, Volver located at the Kimmel Cultural Campus in Philadelphia. We take an in-depth look into Jennifer’s career and the amazing program that the Garces Group is offering as an opportunity for minority Chefs on the rise, what it benefits, and how you can indulge your senses with the menus of these highlighted chefs.
\nWe next hear from Maranda Burns who graduated in 2011 from The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College to become a Pastry Chef. From there she worked inside some of the best and most well-known kitchens in Philadelphia before she and her husband made a drastic decision to quit their jobs and travel the world in 2018. After a year of traveling, her passion for everyone’s favorite frozen dessert–ice cream–went from aspiration to an achievable goal and Peewee’s Ice Cream was created. Now located as one of the shops at The Feed Mill in Medford, NJ, this uber-popular ice cream pop-up concept took off and became a melt-in-your-mouth sweet treat for all to enjoy.
